Project Description

Low Self-esteem

What is low Self-esteem?
Low Self-esteem is a thinking disorder in which the individual thinks of him or herself as inadequate, unacceptable, unworthy, unlovable or incompetent. It is an irrational view of self that affects a person’s belief about themselves and results in producing faulty assumptions and ongoing self-defeating behaviour.

Symptoms of Low Self-esteem

  • Fear
  • Anxiety
  • Self-esteem attacks
  • Depression
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Hypervigilance
  • Lack of assertiveness
  • Lack of self-confidence
  • Obsessive compulsive
  • Addictive behaviours

  • Poor boundaries
  • Poor relationship and social skills.

Causes of Low Self-esteem

Low Self-esteem always forms in childhood when an individual is developing his initial view of himself and his attributes. If a child feels loved, is given direction in a loving way, is supported, encouraged, gets positive attention, is taught skills and senses that those in his environment thinks he is of value, he is likely to form healthy self-esteem. If on the other hand the child is mistreated, unsupported, or overly criticized he will more than likely feel that he is of little value. This can be reinforced by parents who are not home enough to interact with their children or even to know their children’s activities or their social network. Such parental indifference programs a child to have no boundaries, to make poor decisions and to look for love and belonging outside the home.

How can Counselling help?

Counselling can help clients with low self-esteem make changes to their thinking, behaviour and relationships, to develop a positive view of themselves and to change their negative core beliefs.
